Each Nigerian gold medalist at the London Olympic Games has been promised a cash reward of N1.5m by Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell Milk.
Disclosing this yesterday, during the contract signing of the partnership between the Nigeria Olympic Committee and Promasidor at the NOC secretariat inside the National Stadium Complex stadium in Lagos, Chief Keith Richards, Managing Director of the beverage firm, said that silver and bronze medal winners were also going to get N1m and N500, 000 respectively.
Richards said that the cash reward was their little way of motivating Team Nigeria’s athletes at the Games, holding between July 27 and August 12 in the city of London.
“We are proud to be the official milk of the Nigerian Olympic team to London 2012. Olympics is the most prestigious sporting competition in the world.
“Our partnership with NOC adds an extra dimension to what we can offer Nigerian athletes. This will make other sports to come through and apart from what we are committing to the NOC as the official milk of Team Nigeria, we are also promising to give N1.5m to gold medalists. Silver medalists are also going to get N1m while bronze winners are to receive N500, 000”, added Richards.
He noted that all medalists are to get an all year-round supply of Cowbell milk.
His announcement was met with a round of applause by those present, including the President of the NOC, Sani Ndanusa, who hailed Cowbell for being the first to promise London-bound athletes cash reward for medals won.
Also yesterday, NOC entered into a partnership with the International Energy Insurance PLC to focus majorly on hockey development.
The Chief Operating Officer of IEI, Martins Wayer, said the firm was not new in the sports terrain, stating that they have always been supporting sports development in the country.
He noted that sports development is an area that was dear to them and hoped that their alliance with the NOC would open new opportunities for them to do more for sports.
“We want to keep our youths off the streets and we promise to continue to support NOC anytime that we are called upon because sports can be used to re-engineer the society for better functioning and that is one of our key desires for this sociery”, said Wayer.
