CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces that Facebook will be testing a dislike button

Facebook might finally give users the ability to “dislike” things. During a question-and-answer session streamed live on Facebook on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg said the company was testing alternatives to the “Like” button.

“We’ve finally heard you and we’re working on this and we will deliver something that meets the needs of the larger community. People have asked about the “dislike” button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.”

The 31-year-old entrepreneur said that the company hoped that the button wouldn’t be used to be negative but for people expressing empathy.

“Not every moment is a good moment. If you share something that’s sad like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away, it may not be comfortable to like that post…I do think it’s important to give people more options than liking it.”
