…Targets Development of Grassroots Photographers
By Dominic Umoh
The Special Assistant and Chief Photographer to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Ms. Idara Adiakpan, has unveiled plans for the 2025 edition of the Visuals Conference and Awards, an initiative designed to promote grassroots photographers across Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking during a media chat in Uyo, Ms. Adiakpan said the second edition of the conference is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 9th and Friday, 10th October 2025 respectively.
She said that the event will focus on empowering emerging talents through mentorship, skill development, and exposure to industry experts and opportunities.
According to her, the initiative aims to create a platform where young photographers can showcase their skills, gain mentorship, and connect with industry professionals who will inspire and guide them toward excellence.
“My intention is to empower young photographers and create an environment where their creativity is recognised, promoted, and projected,” she said.
Ms. Adiakpan explained that the idea behind the Visuals Conference was inspired by her personal experience as a young entrepreneur seeking growth, mentorship, and exposure to professional networks that could enhance her craft.
“As a young photographer, I travelled across Nigeria and beyond in search of knowledge, meeting mentors and industry experts. But I understand that not everyone can afford that privilege, so I decided to bring these opportunities closer to them,” she added.
Ms. Adiakpan emphasized that the Visuals Conference is designed to be an interactive platform where photographers can learn, collaborate, and build sustainable careers while recognising those who have created impact in the state and beyond.
“Our creative industry is vast, and this initiative is to keep our creators informed, inspired, and connected to global trends in photography and visual storytelling,” she noted.
The 2025 edition, she said, will go beyond just a conference as it will also feature an Awards presentation to celebrate exceptional talents and creativity within the photography and visual arts industry.
Ms. Adiakpan described the initiative as her way of giving back to the creative community, adding that participation in the conference is free for all photographers.
Speaking during the briefing, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, thanked Ms. Idara Adiakpan for organizing the event, describing it as a commendable way of giving back to society and supporting individuals in photography and cinematography.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the ideals of Pastor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda.
Comrade John also lauded her decision to recognize, identify, and support photographers at the grassroots level, assuring that the Union is ready to partner with her and give the event adequate publicity.
On his part, the Chancellor, Conference of Online Publishers in Akwa Ibom State (COOPA), Comrade Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, applauded the initiative, describing it as one that will inspire and motivate young creatives to grow and explore their talents.
The conference will feature distinguished speakers and industry leaders, including Hon. Aisha Amadu Augie, Director-General of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC), renowned creative photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi; Emmanuel Oyeleke, a virtual artist; and Eduwem Ukpong, Creative Director of PhotoFreak.
